Tucked deep within the Sumter National Forest outside Newbury, South Carolina, Old Tranquil Cemetery holds the remains of generations of families who built this community. Today, it sits abandoned — no fence, no caretaker, and dozens of towering pine trees whose roots and weight now threaten the very gravestones that mark these lives.
The Old Tranquil Preservation Society was founded by descendants and neighbors who believe these ancestors deserve better. Our plan is straightforward: remove the dangerous trees, install a protective fence, and establish ongoing care so this sacred ground is never forgotten again.
